All good things must come to an end. Unfortunately for metalheads, Hellfest is no exception to the rule. Sunday June 30 marked the last day of Hellfest 2024. While fatigue was clearly evident on the faces of some, others were still in fine form to live out this final day, marked in particular by performances from Nova Twins, Blues Pills and Batushka.
The day began on our side with a set by the British Nova Twins. Discovered in 2019 at Clisson, we particularly appreciate their musical style, blending rap metal and punk, and the infectious energy of their two frontwomen, Amy Love and Georgia South. And the good news is that the magic is still working! In the early afternoon of Sunday June 30, the Nova Twins took a good part of the audience with them, thanks in particular to their hits " Antagonist " and " Choose Your Fighter ", delivered with style and passion to Mainstage 1.
It's not easy to replace a band at the drop of a hat. Yet that's the challenge French band Karras accepted. Scheduled to take Caliban's place on theAltar this Sunday afternoon, Karras put on a great show. Playing death metal and even grindcore, the trio created a few wild circle pits under the tent. It has to be said that the three members of Karras are no beginners. Quite the contrary, in fact. Led by Yann Heurtaux (Mass Hysteria), Diego Janson (Sickbag) and Etienne Sarthou (AqME), Karras really shook up the Altar stage on Sunday.
Another stage, another atmosphere, with Swedish band Blues Pills on Mainstage 1. Far less frenetic than some of the bands programmed at Hellfest, Blues Pills nonetheless succeeded in drawing us into their world of blues and 70's rock'n'roll. Buoyed byElin Larsson 's powerful, melancholy vocals and vintage tunes, Blues Pills won our hearts and ears!
The teenage music that marked an entire generation was invited to Mainstage 2 this Sunday, June 30, by the Canadian band Simple Plan. Unsurprisingly, memories came flooding back for many of the festival-goers present, thanks to hits like " I'm Just a Kid " and " Perfect ", and short covers like Avril Lavigne's " Sk8er Boi " and " Mr. Brightside ". Despite the undeniable good humor of its members and the balloons thrown into the audience, boredom unfortunately crept in for us during this set.
At Hellfest, you can hear blues rock, grindcore and punk on the same day, but also liturgical chants intermingled with black metal. The proof is in the form of Batushka's surprisingly successful set. Programmed under the Temple, this Polish band presented festival-goers with an ultra-polished set, complete with coffin, skull, candle lighting and black outfits. The faces of each band member on stage were also concealed under a hood and behind a black veil. Created by Krzysztof Drabikowski, Batushka offered fans of sound and visual experiences a moment out of time.
The Hellfest Ferris wheel is a not-to-be-missed attraction in Clisson that delights festival-goers every year. It's worth noting that this Ferris wheel (available for 6 euros) reaches a height of 40 meters, and allows metalheads who dare to try the experience to discover Hellfest from another angle. Once at the top, you can admire the sublime sculpture in tribute to Lemmy Kilmister, with the Warzone and Valley next to it, as well as get a glimpse of what's going on on the Mainstages.
Hellfest also boasts a large number of food stands. A total of 42 food stands are spread across four different zones throughout the festival. With burgers, Asian cuisine, pizzas and ice creams, there's something for everyone. Diversity is the order of the day at Hellfest. In fact, over 80% of the stands offer vegetarian options, as well as vegan (30%), home-made (80%) and French (80%).
But what happened to ††† Crosses? Originally scheduled to hit the Valley at 7:45pm, the duo formed by Chino Moreno (Deftones, Team Sleep, Palms) and Shaun Lopez (singer of the late-Far) finally took to the stage over three-quarters of an hour late due to a technical problem. Unfortunately for the fans who had the courage to wait, Crosses had no choice but to offer a very shortened set, lasting around 15 minutes. But that didn't stop the duo from unveiling their bewitching universe of electro and rock. However, we would have appreciated it if Crosses had surrounded themselves with several other live musicians, to bring more depth to the scenic side. To thank fans for their long wait, Chino Moreno treated himself to a little crowd bath, greeting and shaking hands with the audience at the end of the set.
Crosses haven't finished their set yet, but Madball soon take to the stage on time, not far away, on the famous Warzone. As always on this stage dedicated to hardcore and punk, pogos and slams followed one another throughout the day. The New Yorkers from Madball were no exception, delivering an energetic, over-the-top set.
Until now, Hellfest has been accustomed to offering festival-goers an incredible fireworks display at the close of the event. This Sunday evening, as the Foo Fighters finished their set at around 11.50pm, many festival-goers waited until midnight, expecting to see the traditional fireworks show. Unfortunately for them, there were no fireworks on Sunday evening. So, as a consolation, many of them prolonged their stay on the site to admire the flames that ignite every evening, illuminating the site's incredible scenery.
Missing Hellfest already? Good news, because the festival dedicated to extreme music is announcing its return to Clisson in 2025!
