Welcome to Hellfest! Hellfest returned to Clisson on Thursday, June 27, 2024, with a 4-day program of extreme music, fury and good humor! The arrival of the Guardian of Darkness and the first favorites of this 17th edition of Hellfest... Here's a look back at Thursday's ultra-powerful shows by Asinhell, Green Lung and Dark Tranquillity!
The first concerts of the day were announced for 4.30pm, but the Hellfest site was already packed with people by early afternoon. With the gates opening at 2pm and the fine weather in full swing, the first festival-goers took advantage of the opportunity to wander the aisles, bask in the sun on the grass or rush to the Sanctuary to stock up on Hellfest merchandise and clothing.
Second year for The Sanctuary, and the success continues! Once again this year, the official Hellfest merchandising boutique saw an impressive line-up, stretching all the way to the Altar stage, from opening to closing. Once again, metalheads didn't hesitate to wait for several hours to get their hands on Hellfest t-shirts, sweatshirts, caps and mugs!
Asinhell opened Mainstage 1 on Thursday June 27, the first day of Hellfest 2024. And one thing's for sure: the Danish death metal band had the perfect recipe for setting the mood, with ultra-powerful beats and razor-sharp riffs, all backed by the powerful vocals of Marc Grewe (ex-Morgoth, Insidious Disease).
Alongside Marc Grewe, festival-goers were delighted to find Michael Poulsen, none other than Volbeat's charismatic frontman, on guitar. Although Michael Poulsen didn't use his vocal chords for Asinhell, and remained confined to the guitar, the Danish artist was a real eye-catcher, bringing smiles to the faces of festival-goers at the gate!
As always, Hellfest is an opportunity to see many festival-goers dressed up as superheroes, horror movie characters or unidentified weirdos. Jason Voorhees, Mario & Luigi, Ghostbusters or even demons and skeletons... everyone tries to find the best outfit to make a difference and make the audience smile at the same time!
It's THE new feature of this 2024 edition! This year, the festival has pulled out all the stops, offering festival-goers a pleasant surprise with the arrival of the Gardienne des Ténèbres. Installed at the entrance to the Kingdom of Muscadet, in place of the fire pyramid, the Gardienne des Ténèbres now comes to life thanks to the incredible work of La Compagnie La Machine.
Pivoting on herself, spitting fire as well as water from her mouth and stinger, the Guardian of Darkness unveils numerous effects, each as impressive as the next. As her legs begin to move, as does her abdomen, her gaze is as profoundly real as it is disconcerting. The magic works, and we're back for more!
The surprise of the day! (Dolch), from Berlin, Germany, truly charmed us, drawing us into their spellbinding, soaring universe. Offering a delicious blend of doom, dark rock, gothic rock and ambient sounds, all carried by the enchanting voice of its singer, (Dolch) delivered a set that was both intense and atmospheric.
This is one of our favorites from the first day of Hellfest 2024. And it was one to discover on the Valley. Called Green Lung, this British stoner and doom metal band can count on the communicative energy of all its members and the undisputed charisma of its frontman to sweep us away from the very first track. The rest of the set was just as flamboyant and successful. A must-see to remind us that NWOBHM (New wave of British heavy metal) really does come from Great Britain!
Another favorite of the day: Scandinavian band Dark Tranquillity. On Thursday evening, the audience gathered under the Altar stage tent to discover this leading melodic death metal band. Energy, power and fury punctuated the hour-long set, which featured old hits alongside new material, proving that Dark Tranquillity are still at the top of the bill!
The program continues this Friday, June 28, with concerts by Machine Head, Biohazard, Savage Lands, Tom Morello, Shaka Ponk and Amorphis!
