He died at the age of 100, in 2020: one of the last two surviving Compagnons de la Libération. Art dealer and painter, historian, active Resistance fighter alongside Jean Moulin, Laure Diebold and Suzanne Olivier... Daniel Cordier was one of the heroes of the liberation of France during the Second World War.
From March 19 to July 13, 2025, the Musée de la Libération - Musée du Général Leclerc - Musée Jean Moulin is organizing a new exhibition in tribute to the Resistance fighter, entitled Daniel Cordier: la guerre, l'art, l'histoire.
In the summer of 1940, when Marshal Pétain announced that he wanted to stop fighting and surrender to the Germans, Daniel Cordier rebelled and joined the Free French Forces. In 1942, he was appointed secretary to Jean Moulin, with whom he discovered the art world and his passion for painting.
The exhibition highlights the actions and achievements of the Resistance fighter, and traces his career as a gallery owner, collector and art dealer. A great patron of the arts, he donated over 500 works to the Centre Pompidou. He was particularly interested in the work of Chaïm Soutine, Jean Tinguely, Nicolas de Staël, Jean Dubuffet...
The Musée de la Libération has brought together various works and archive documents to tell the story of this surprising and inspiring journey, where art and history meet to pay tribute to a fierce and committed Resistance fighter.
