The first rum bar in Paris has opened its doors in a new hotel, discreetly opened this summer in the capital's 5th arrondissement.
Since November 8, 2018, theHôtel Monte Cristo has been delighting the palates of rum lovers with the opening of its bar: the 1802.
Why 1802, you may ask? The date refers to the year of birth of Alexandre Dumas, grandson of a sugarcane plantation owner on the island of Saint Domingue (Haiti).
Behind this new bar lies a veritable Ali Baba's cave for any rum connoisseur, with a selection of 500 references, carefully chosen by Alexandre Vingtier, spirits expert, co-founder of Rumporter magazine and author of the book " 101 rhums à découvrir ".
But newcomers curious to learn more about this spirit that continues to fascinate the French can rest assured... Yes, 1802 is dedicated to them too.
Rely on the on-site bartenders for advice and guidance, or refer to the attractive menu on offer for the occasion, where you can learn more about the different types (rones, rum, rhum) and categories (white, molasses, agricole...).
To help you make your choice, the menu suggests 10 timeless rums characterized by different ages and tasting notes (Appleton 21 ans from Jamaica, Passador de Oro XO from Guatemala) as well as 10 rums of the moment (Fair XO Acacia Finish, Compagnie des Indes Fidji 13 ans...).
In addition to rum tastings, Bar 1802 also offers cocktails... made with rum, of course! On the menu? Two non-alcoholic cocktails, six revisited classics - including the Old Fashioned Rum and the 1802-style Ti Punch - as well as arranged rums (macerated for 2 months), a punch ball to share (between 4 and 6 people) and four creative cocktails, including " In Cachaça Veritas " made with Cachaça Abelha, red wine from Provence, lavender syrup, Aqua faba, flower bitter, or " Honshu Island " made with Nine Leaves Japanese Rum, sake, Japanese roasted rice tea and yellow lemon oil.
To accompany these beverages, the 1802 bar offers a Pugliese Burrata, a mixed board of charcuterie and cheese, and a surprise plate!
Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health. Drink in moderation.
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
