The Musée d'Orsay pursues its noble goal of bringing the European Belle Époque to life. For its reopening, the museum invites us to Switzerland, to meet the painters who affirmed a particular and little-known style, anchored in the Swiss intellectual landscape while opening up to the European profusion. From May 19 to July 25, 2021, we embark on a voyage of discovery of the Swiss Modernities.
Alongside works by Felix Vallotton, which we discovered in 2014 at the Grand Palais, over 70 works tell the story of the painters who contributed to a certain Swiss modernity, to Switzerland's cultural dynamism, from 1890 to 1914.
Their names are Cuno Amiet, Giovanni and Augusto Giacometti, Ernest Bieler and Max Buri, and they were trained in France, Germany and Italy. They brought vitality and modernism to a key moment in the history of the country's young federal state, created in 1848.
Unfairly ignored outside Switzerland, these artists worked at a pivotal time in the birth of modernity, redefining the artistic codes and techniques of their period. The Musée d'Orsay has therefore decided to pay a fitting tribute to these painters, whom we are fortunate enough to discover here.
The exhibition showcases the abundance of artists, and aims to highlight individual artists while weaving links between their careers. The space is divided into 10 sections, each different from the next!
A beautiful exhibition that invites us to travel.
