Art dealer and talent scout, Paul Durand-Ruel contributed to the success of many artists' careers. The Caillebotte Property offers us to discover five of them during an exhibition entitled Paul Durand-Ruel and Post-Impressionism, to be seen from May 19. The exhibition is extended until November 14, 2021.

Paul Durand-Ruel was not an artist. His skill was to unearth young talent and promote their works in the greatest art galleries of the 19th century. It is partly thanks to him that the impressionist movement was recognized and appreciated. The Caillebotte Estate has therefore decided to pay tribute to this art dealer with an incomparable flair, by organizing the exhibition Paul Durand-Ruel and Post-Impressionism. To be discovered from May 19 to November 14, 2021.

But then, if this gentleman was not a painter, what works will we admire during this exhibition? The Caillebotte Property wanted to highlight five painters of the post-impressionist generation (Henri Moret, Maxime Maufra, Gustave Loiseau, Georges d'Espagnat and Albert André) who worked exclusively with the Durand-Ruel gallery, shortly before the art dealer's retirement.

These five men followed in the footsteps of the Impressionists while bringing their own characteristic style to this artistic movement. Whether they chose to depict landscapes and seascapes (Moret, Maufra and Loiseau) or were more adventurous and dabbled in genre scenes and decorative painting, these artists were able to appropriate the fashionable movements and make something new of them.

The exhibition brings together paintings that are rarely exhibited, but reveal the great art of these painters. The five men were not often exhibited together after the death of Paul Durand-Ruel, although their works may seem to respond to or complement each other.

Soft colors, soothing scenes, one travels through these paintings in complete tranquility, plunging here and there into a universe that can sometimes seem timeless.

But since Paul Durand-Ruel is at the center of this exhibition, one cannot only be interested in the artists' paintings (even if it is difficult to detach one's gaze from certain landscapes). The exhibition also proposes to take an interest in the professional and friendly relationships that linked the dealer to his artists, through catalogs and a rich correspondence.

Come and meet this man who was so influential in the world ofImpressionist art, and who today enjoys a well-deserved recognition.

Don't miss the exhibition dedicated to Martin Guillaume Biennais and organized at the Caillebotte Property, which is part of the celebrations of the bicentenary of the death of Napoleon I.
