From October 18, 2023, in the Hôtel Collot, opposite Place de la Concorde, Galerie Kugel will be hosting a free exhibition of treasures from the Baltic Sea, a collection ofprecious objects to be admired endlessly. This family of art dealers offers the first presentation in France of amber, an organic material derived from the fossilization of tree resin. Used since Antiquity in jewelry, these stones are often considered gems and appear precious, with their golden color!
A substance with many properties, amber can be found in a wide range of fascinating objects, including sculptures, jewelry, caskets, goblets and other works of art with shimmering reflections. Ranging from yellow to reddish, it can contain inclusions of animals or plants trapped in the resin millions of years ago, making them veritable relics of the past, useful for science. Some 50 pieces dating from the 16th to 18th centuries will enable you to observe all the nuances of this magnificent material.
Many Baltic amber objects have been found in countries all over the world, from Tutankhamun's tomb to China, via the Greek and Roman worlds. From the Baltic to the Adriatic, the "Amber Road" was an important trade route. For this exhibition, we're talking about a fossilized resin from a prehistoric forest 30 to 40 million years ago, between Poland and Russia.
