The first, Barbès-Rochechouart, takes its name from the intersection of boulevards Barbès and Rochechouart, two important figures in French history. Armand Barbès was a revolutionary republican, while Marguerite de Rochechouart was abbess of Montmartre in the 18th century.

The same is true of La Chapelle and Goutte d'Or, two other bastions of cultural diversity in the City of Light.
