The first, Barbès-Rochechouart, takes its name from the intersection of boulevards Barbès and Rochechouart, two important figures in French history. Armand Barbès was a revolutionary republican, while Marguerite de Rochechouart was abbess of Montmartre in the 18th century.
The neighborhood is marked by its ethnic mix, with a strong presence of communities of North African, sub-Saharan and Asian origin, who bring with them a wealth of culture and gastronomy. This is where you can enjoy both Chinese ravioli and a good thiéboudiène!
The same is true of La Chapelle and Goutte d'Or, two other bastions of cultural diversity in the City of Light.
