Let's face it, Japanese restaurants in Paris are rarely among the most affordable addresses in the capital, and it's a well-known fact that to discover true Japanese flavors, you have to pay the price. However, there are a few Japanese restaurants in Paris that are still holding out against the invaders, offering top-quality dishes made from ultra-fresh fish, with an emphasis on menus that are affordable for most budgets.
The Wrap'n Roll Sushi restaurant, just a stone's throw from the Saint-Lazare train station in a discreet pedestrian passageway, may not look like much, but it's a perfect example of the "don't be fooled by appearances" motto, and one of those Parisian addresses that connoisseurs pass on under the mantle. In fact, it's a cult address in the 9th arrondissement, and has been a favorite of connoisseurs and regulars for many years.
Carefully greeted by the restaurant's attentivestaff, you make your way upstairs - the first floor during the week being a victim of its own success with local workers and tourists - and discover Wrap'n Roll Sushi's well-stocked menu, which focuses mainly on rolls, plump makis and california, presented in a long ribbon on the plate, and offered at a really affordable price for the quantity and quality.
The sourcing and freshness of the products are evident from the moment you taste them: salmon, sea bream, crab and shrimp seem to have just come out of the water to land in front of us, ready to be snapped up by our pair of chopsticks. The same goes for the ginger, naturally blond in color, the miso soup, stripped of its usual extra grams of salt, and the fermented cabbage salad, crunchy as can be.
Now it's up to you to choose which of the many original dishes on the menu will be your favorite. For our part, we opt for the rolls with grilled eel (the restaurant doesn't skimp on a dish as rare and sought-after as eel; a pleasure!); for the rolls with shrimp tempura, crispy to perfection; for the more classic rolls with cream cheese, our favorite, fresh and tasty; or for the rolls with crab, topped with capelin roe.
Everything is good, fresh, generously served and, frankly, amazing value for money. An affordable Japanese address in Paris that undeniably deserves to be better known, so much so that it stands out for the originality of its rolls, the friendliness of its service, and the smiles it brings on tasting and leaving the restaurant, happy as we are to have eaten so well for so little, in the end.
A big yes for Wrap'n Roll, the must-visit restaurant in the Saint-Lazare district!
